This past weekend, with my dad in town, I got the chance to play tour guide and show off my city, one of my favorite things to do. Living in DC, there are so many things to do and see, that I’m always adding activities to my never-ending bucket list. With visitors, I always warn them to bring their walking shoes, because I’m all for maximizing time in the city and usually drag everyone around excitedly pointing out my favorite DC spots, leaving us all utterly exhausted by the time the weekend’s over.

And this weekend was no different. Saturday, we ventured up to the National Arboretum, which I’ll definitely be heading back to in the spring when everything’s in bloom again. We also walked all the way there from Union Station, through scenic Northeast DC (cue sarcasm), which, if you’re familiar with DC at all, was quite the hike and left me feeling a bit like Annie Oakley. But it was a beautiful once we arrived.

Sunday was the highlight of the visit, for me. Having lived in DC for more than a year, I’ve been dying to go to the Newseum—in short, DC’s museum of media. Given that I’m the in the public relations industry and a self-proclaimed media junkie, I knew I’d love this place, but I didn’t realize how much I would. It’s without a doubt one of my favorite places in DC now. Not only are the exhibits so interesting, but the view of DC is to die for. Walking through the exhibit, I kept thinking back to my favorite book when I was kid, “From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler,” where two kids run away and spend the night in the MET. Seriously, friends, if I could move in I would. While I didn’t get to see everything, my favorite exhibits were, of course, the homage to 9/11 and the Pulitzer Prize winning photography from the last 50 years (some of these images are so searing and haunting, it’s crazy to think how quickly the moment might’ve passed by in reality). Walter Iooss, one of Sports Illustrated’s, most famous photographers also had an awesome exhibit, which I think is only there temporarily, so you should catch it while you can.

I've shared my love for maps a time or two here, a penchant I think stems from the fact that I've moved about seven times and probably also from my innate need to compensate for my lack of directional sense. But all digressing aside, I was excited to stumble on some cool prints featured on La Belle Vie's Tumblr account a few days ago. The California collection from Pink Bathtub Designs is fun and cute, and if I had actually ever been to California, I would probably snatch these up in a heartbeat. But since I've yet to make it out to the West Coast, I'm hoping that a Florida or DC line will be in the works soon.

Book + Art Whimsy

Seems like I'm writing a lot about books lately, so leave it to me to bring to you a gem of a find when it comes to books and art--C.S. Neal--whose work I spotted over at Paper & Ink this morning.

Neal's whimsical illustrations were featured alongside the NPR Summer Reading list, which mind you I've most definitely used to update my GoodReads account. Turns out, after perusing Neal's site for a bit he does a ton of illustrations for books, book reviews, bands, local shows and other ephemera.

How fun is his work? I love it.

As I posted earlier my love for the Tumblr site BookshelfPorn, I was thrilled to see the lovely review of the blog in the New Yorker yesterday. Not surprisingly, the site's creator, Anthony Dever shares my hesitation over the Kindle.

My friend Meg and I, who recently started our own book club--Books and Brunch--have come to the conclusion that given the scenario, we would much rather take the library from Beauty and the Beast over the closet in Sex & the City. Although, don't get me wrong, I'd take more closet space any day of the week.

I have a penchant for collecting prints. I'm always finding cute sketches, drawing or watercolors when I travel or peruse around the local flea markets/craft shows and I can never help but to pick up a couple here and there. Needless to say this has led to a somewhat random collection of prints, that for the most part are stuffed into drawers, unframed, as I live in a rental apartment with little wall space in my room. One day, I plan on creating a gallery wall with all of my collections, but until then I'll just rotate them in and out as the mood strikes.

My latest obsession was found while scouring through Design Sponge last week where I saw these fun bookshelf prints. As collecting miscellaneous books probably surpasses my collection of prints, combining the two seems like the natural second step, right? Available on Etsy, these Jane Mount prints come detailing a wide variety of books. I think the children's collection would be perfect for a kids room or nursery. Also available on her Web site are a few more designs, including a bookshelf print nearly identical to my own book collection currently propped against the wall.

Oh goodness, folks, I feel like it's been forever since I last updated everyone. Life's been very busy lately, also the fact that I didn't have Internet at home for nearly 2 weeks put a damper on my blogging habits.

But, alas, I have fun new life updates! One, I finally have my very own big girl job! This past week marked my first few days at my new work home and I couldn't be happier to being work with a very passionate, hard-working team. As you know, I so frequently dreamed about the day when I'd be able to declare that I've officially started my career and now here I am, at last. Expect a full update very soon! Two, I've been asked to be the guest, alumna blogger for my sorority! So, for the next few months you can also find me here.

Baking for Good

If you've been to my apartment at all, you've probably notice that my cooking abilities are limited to any of the following: spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, and take-out. Cooking is quite honestly, not my forte. I'm terrible at deciding when the chicken is fully cooked and it's exhausting trying to make an entire meal, just for yourself. But baking, on the other hand, is something I'll fully get behind. For Christmas, my step-dad bought me Southern Living's Best Loved Cookies cookbook and amid this blizzard, it's getting some use!

I also recently stumbled upon the awesome online bake sale site Baking for Good. Not only do the founders (and bakers) at this site serve up some delicious looking baked goods, they're devoted to donating 15 percent of every purchase on the site to the cause of your choice. Currently, the site's featured nonprofit is the Lincoln Center Theater's Open Stages Education Program, encouraging economically disadvantaged students in the NYC area to develop deeper interests in the arts.

Snow days

This weekend, D.C. again experienced snowmaggedon (part deux). With more than two feet of snow predicted, the roomie and I headed over to her bf's house to snow ourselves in for the weekend. Between Friday and Saturday, the D.C. metro area received about 32 inches worth of snow!

As last year I was in Tampa during the SuperBowl, watching the game take place in my home state again I realized how surreal it is to be in a completely different area a year later. While my best friends texted me from their waterfront, warm homes, I watched nearly three feet of snow surround my new home. It's really amazing how much changes in a year.

But, as usual, we made the most of the snow, building igloos, snow forts and drinking lots of hot chocolate.

Haiti's Devastation

The devastation occurring in Haiti right now is truly heart wrenching. And while my heart breaks for those in the area, it's also warmed by the overflow of donations and kind thoughts. The Red Cross text message campaign has raised more than $1 million as of last night, with more donations flowing in.

If you haven't donated yet, consider texting "Haiti" to 90999, which will allows you to make a $10 donation to be charged to your cell phone bill.

It's sad how it sometimes takes a catastrophe to put things into place in our own lives. My worries seem (thankfully) very insignificant right now. Don't forget to keep Haiti and all the volunteers in your thoughts and prayers.

Baby it's cold outside

Breakfast food may quite honestly be the key to my heart. Especially now, with the frigid weather outside, there's nothing better than waking up to a warm cup of coffee and a cozy brunch in your own apartment.

This morning, the roomie and I hosted a few friends and neighbors for our own version of brunch bunch. On the menu? Eggnog French Toast. So delicious.

Well, it's officially 2010, folks. There's something so wonderfully exciting about the beginning of a new year, with everyone filled with resolve, ambition and optimism. This year, I enjoyed my first D.C. New Year's Eve in great company, a sure sign of a wonderful year to come. And while I don't necessarily believe in resolutions, but more so establishing goals, I've certainly begun list-making things I hope to accomplish this year.

2009: At a glance

As I begin the obligatory end-of-2009 post at home in Florida, I can hardly believe how much this year has held. A year ago, I would have never imagined that a year later, I would be where I am -- in a completely different city, hours and miles away from everyone I know and love. 2009, I've found, has been nothing short of pushing myself to the limit, testing my own personal boundaries to find any innate resilience. It's hard to believe that a little over six months ago, I was still in undergrad with little idea that I would have my own D.C. apartment in a few months. And now, as a new D.C. resident, I'm so frequently asked the question, "Why did you move here?" And besides the cliched hope of following my career dreams, I don't have much more of an answer other than, "Why not?" What better time to push yourself and explore the world than in the moments after graduating college, where energy and excitement for the future still pervade your life.

So, now as I look into what 2010 holds, I think I've found the perfect New Year's resolution: To stop over-romanticizing the next steps in my life and enjoy where I am. Or, in the words of Ida Scott Taylor:

"One day at a time--this is enough. Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone; and do not be troubled about the future, for it has not yet come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering."

Snowpocalypse

This weekend, I experienced my very first blizzard-like snowfall. While I've seen snow before, never have I dealt with nearly two feet. It was quite the experience, needless to say.

Tomorrow, I'm headed back to Jacksonville for Christmas and I could not be more excited to see my dad, brother and friends! I can't believe Christmas is only a few days away, though. I'm still feeling unprepared.

First of all, I saw this today and have decided that I absolutely need it. If only I actually had my home office set up... Alas, it may have to wait.

But nevertheless, I had an absolutely amazing weekend here in D.C. IT SNOWED! That's right, for the first time in 10 years, I witnessed legit snow. I saw the weather forecast on Friday predicting "rain/snow" for Saturday and everyone was telling me, "Oh, no, Ash, it's not going to snow, it'll just be cold and wet." But, I held my hopes high and sure enough Saturday morning the flakes began to fall. This of course quickly prompted me to call/text/message everyone I know to share my excitement.

Last night, the roomie and I headed down to Georgetown for the annual tree lighting. Despite the frigid weather (now lacking snow), it was lovely.

Reppin' regional pride

Pardon the geek post, but a recent Twitter conversation has the wheels a churnin'. Mark Zuckerberg, of Facebook fame, recently posted an open letter in which he detailed the impending changes coming to Facebook, namely the removal of regional networks. After a bit of tweeting between my good friends and social media nerds, Patrick teased that regional pride on the Internet is a bit outdated. Now, I'm not sure if it's my general position as an all-around sentimental fool, but I'll be honest, I like regional networks on Facebook. Not that I find them particularly useful, but there's something interesting about tagging yourself to a particular domain. Perhaps it's the fact that I'm just a small-town, Southern girl at heart with a true understanding of the benefits of a "community" in all sense of the word (online and off) or maybe it's the fact that as a PR professional, with experience in community relations, I quickly become passionate about my surrounding community, always searching for what makes Jacksonville/Orlando/D.C. unique.

But as social media, and the World Wide Web in general, develops we become connected with one another via niche online outlets, rather than distinct regional communities. So ultimately, Patrick poses a great question: What is the use of physical, regional networks when the vastness of the Internet is our new domain?

Week's end recap: Thanksgiving edition

I've been thoroughly enjoying time with the family in South Carolina during the holiday. Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving - I'm still stuffed!

It's been nice to take a little break, despite the fact that I feel utterly disconnected in that I haven't been online or checking my e-mail non-stop, but every once in a while it's really refreshing to unplug. It's a little quieter here now that my brothers just left, leaving me free reign over the tv/remote control/computers. But of course I didn't get by without their latest enlightenment on all things techie: computers, software and some engineering lingo that was way over my head. But it was a full and bustling house, exactly what I love most. I'm so thankful to have an amazing family and friends to share the day with.

And in light of the holiday, this week's favorites:

Prior to my eight-hour long drive drive from D.C. to S.C., I of course stocked up on audiobooks. This was the perfect novel as I found myself en route back to the South. Set in Louisiana, it only made me more excited to be driving South-bound. And I'm so glad I got the audiobook, because the accents are spot-on.

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is a serious tradition in my book. I can't ever remember not tuning in and one day, hopefully I'll catch it in person.

And last but not least, Christmas music is now officially in full force. Enjoy!

A co-worker of mine sent me this video courtesy of The Huffington Post and in the spirit of Thanksgiving I thought it was too cute not to share. Oh, kids.

Tomorrow afternoon I'm heading home for Thanksgiving and I could not be more excited to see the family. It's been since graduation when I last saw my brother and grandparents, I don't think I've ever gone this long. Since my mom and step-dad moved to South Carolina this summer, we're celebrating at their new "mountain home" as my step-dad refers to it. And we use this term loosely as they are in Columbia, not the Appalachian Trail. But I guess compared to Florida, mountain might not be too far off. It's a little weird to not go home to the house where I grew up for the holidays, but I'm also really excited because I've planned a (insert accent here) Charleston day trip with my brothers and their girlfriends.

Tonight, I'm headed to a Tweetsgiving event here in D.C. - my first "tweet up" and a philanthropic one to boot!

So, in keeping with the thankful-aura of this week, I thought one of my favorite quotes would be quite appropriate. Happy Thanksgiving!

Mason jar mania

My good friend LW and I quite frequently discuss our favorite decorating ideas from across the World Wide Web. As two avid blogosphere addicts, we're always trading ideas and pretending like we can actually afford nicely decorated homes.

One idea that we always come across is incorporating mason jars in seasonal decor. And as two Southerners, born and raised, we're both fully appreciative of this sweet simplicity. No longer just elements of kitchen paraphernalia, they set a homey, rustic ambiance in an affordable way.

And as I come from a family of computer programmers, engineers and financial folk, I generally take it upon myself to provide the creative inspiration for holiday decorations when at home. This year, I'm hoping to scour around the house to find some jars for the centerpieces - wish me luck!

This past weekend I headed to UCF for homecoming and I have to say, it was so surreal being back as an alumna. It was only about 6 months ago when I was last there, as a student, but so much has changed since I left. I'm feeling a little old, not gonna lie.

But regardless, it was an absolutely amazing weekend being reunited with my best friends. And to make it even better, the homecoming game was seriously one of the best games I think I've ever been to. For the first time ever we beat a top 25 ranked team. I know, I know, it sounds a little ridiculous but being a relatively young school, it was a glorious moment for my Knights!

A daydream in a cup

Last week I posted about my excitement over the Starbucks holiday cup debut 2009. But I didn't really get to fully enjoy my Starbucks till this week, when 2 gingerbread lattes later I actually stopped to inspect my festive cup o' joe. It was then I realized the words adorning the side of my oh-so-addictive morning beverage:

I loved this inspirational note so much I found myself wishing that the cup wasn't milk-laden so I that I could keep it around throughout the season. I guess it struck me as particularly poignant becuase I never really think about the holiday season as a time of renewal. New Year's, sure, but the holidays, I've always set aside as more of a time of thanks and reflection rather than renewal. So as I read this, I felt once again inspired and refreshed. Perhaps it was the coffee kicking in, but I truly do think it's time to renew, refresh and rebuild. It's been a long and winding year, from graduation to moving to job hunting that some days I just find myself so completely overwhelmed. Despite my penchant for spontaneity, at heart I really am just a girl starving for stability. So this holiday season, I'm looking forward to refueling on hope and seeing the world (and my life) not as is, but as it can and will be. After all, it is the holiday season.

End of an era

I truly feel like I'm witnessing the end of an era, after noticing this on Twitter: Condé Nast announces layoffs at Vanity Fair and GQ. Its been severely depressing year for the print industry.

Now, as a passionate PR gal, I'm of course submersed in the media on a daily basis but this one this really stuck with me. Mainly because one of my favorite non-major courses in college was Magazine Writing, where I spent many a day idolizing and pouring over the articles in VF. It's such an industry icon, to see witness these layoffs really makes you wonder about the future of print. With citizen journalism and social media developments, information is so much more readily available and accessible - a 6 month lead time is nearly becoming a distant memory.

So, in the spirit of mourning the death of pulp I'd like to reflect on the losses we've experienced thus far this year:

The diminishing magazine industry brings into question even more worries about the advertising industry (my other major), but these I'll save for another day.

Sunday Funday

It is officially, finally fall here in D.C. I've been looking forward to watching the leaves change pretty much since I moved here and this weekend, it seemed that overnight the city's trees became alive with color. I'm having to hold myself back from taking my camera everywhere with me and snapping shots of the fall foliage. Nothing says Florida freak/tourist like that right? But since I haven't truly experienced a real fall since we moved to Florida from North Carolina 10 years ago, I'm relishing in this breathtaking scenery.

Today, as the usual Sunday tradition goes, I trekked up to Eastern Market and returned with some delightful bounty. One of my favorite things about the market is the samples. You can go up and down the farmer's market aisles trying all different types of fresh fruits and vegetables and let me tell you, they're all amazing. This week I fell in love with the honeycrisp apples. Seriously, store-bought apples will never compare. And they're huge! I also returned with my weekly allotment of fresh flowers for the apartment. Aren't they gorgeous?

A weekend in review: cupcakes and ball games

Despite the dreary weather here in D.C., I had an extremely productive weekend. The rain and 40 degree weather made it a great time to play catch up on all things domestic - including taking time to try out the pumpkin cupcake recipe shared by KAG. I have to admit, they turned out very well!

Also this weekend, I spent some much needed time cleaning up all my social media outlets. Oddly enough, when I started this little blog here, I registered with my hotmail account. Not a good plan, friends. So, a year later, I finally figured out how to switch everything over, officially, to my gmail account, which makes my life a lot easier. But, this also means that I'm needing to spend time adding everyone's blogs to my other account, which is taking some time so bear with me.

Saturday evening I met up with the UCF alumni group here to watch the UCF vs. Miami game. Although we didn't win, I'm happy to say it wasn't a complete blowout. But it did make me nostalgic for the days of tailgating as I watched everyone's Facebook statuses as they headed to the game. As the favorite UCF adage goes, "We may not win 'em all, but we never loose a tailgate party."

Also, I found this cartoon this week in the Ft. Myers newspaper. So true. Oh, Florida, some days I really miss you.

I nearly forgot that today is my 1-year blogoversary! I can't believe it's been a year since I started this, on one hand it was forever ago and another it seems like it was just yesterday when Miss Monogram and I chatted about blogging rather than marketing before class. Thanks for the inspiration, lady. :)

Looking back, quite a lot has happened. From break-ups to big girl jobs, I didn't really know what I wanted this to be when I began, but its evolved into an amazing cathartic experience being able to share my thoughts and feelings, despite the miles. So for now, I'm off to sip some more hot chocolate as it's in the 40's here. A lot has changed in a year, no more 90 degree Octobers, no more shorts on Halloween.

Only the mediocre are always at their best

I've recently become addicted to the New York Times column Corner Office, where each week Adam Bryant interviews top executives across all industries. A bit late, today I finally caught up on Sunday's column - an interview with the C.E.O. of Duke Energy, James Rogers. As a full-time working woman now (read: professional intern), I'm finally where I want to be, within reach of my career dreams and goals. But, now that I've made it to the threshold of my future I battle with the ways in which I can improve to make myself even more marketable as an employee (especially in this economy).

I look at the people around me and wonder how they handle all that's on their plates. How and when do you transition from day-to-day duties to strategy and planning? I used to envision a time or title or age when you crossed that line, but as Rogers points out, it's fundamentally important to our success to remain engaged in the daily activites of your company, clients and employees throughout your career.

Fortunately, I feel blessed that every day I wake up excited to go work, to be a part of an industry that I love, one that incites change, advocacy and awareness. But nonetheless, my fears of mediocrity push me more than anything else. Some days, it is exhausting trying out outrun the sound of settling (no pun intended). But I find it refreshing each week to read about the successes of these executives, as I store away their insights like intangible step stones to my future.

Another wonderful weekend in The District and it's finally feeling like fall.

My Eastern Market Sundays are becoming a rather nice tradition to look forward to, especially this time of year. If you're not familiar with D.C., Eastern Market is flea market plus farmers market meets craft show. Seriously, it doesn't get any better than that. And it's 90 percent outdoors, so people bring their pups and peruse the aisles and it's just one of my favorite places ever. And lucky for me, it happens every weekend just minutes away.

This week, I was on the lookout for some mini-watercolor paintings of the city, but I didn't find the right ones so that may have to hold off till next week.

However, we did bring home our weekly fresh flowers, which are looking beautiful on our newly finished (and Eastern Market find) table.

Life in the District

It's weekends like this that make me firmly believe that I could be in D.C. forever. It couldn't have been a more perfect, October weekend. With high's in the low 70's, the weather was absolutely glorious and to top it off, my step-brother and his girlfriend came up for a surprise visit!

I've become quite talented at giving walking tours of D.C., I must say. Despite the fact that my family usually hates me when it's over and we all collapse in utter exhaustion, it's always worth it. And with blissful weather this weekend, I couldn't of been happier to spend time with family in a city I adore.

To top it off, all of my teams won this weekend! UCF pulled out a win, Auburn and even the Jaguars. Surprising, I know. Now with less than 2 weeks to go until the UCF vs. Miami game, which I wish I was attending, I'm a little stressed for my boys. But let's hope they rest up next weekend.

I quite frequently wonder if I'm missing the bridal gene. I'm not going to lie, I've never honestly been one of those girls who has their entire wedding planned out. I'd be perfectly happy with something extremely small, but exceptionally romantic (pending that I actually get married before my social security kicks in).

So, when my roommate suggested making a drinking game out of TLC's Say Yes to the Dress, I knew I was in good company.

Here's how it goes:

1 drink: when the gay guy lisps
1 drink: when the gay guy mentions his need for an applemartini
1 drink: when anyone stays something completely stereotypical
1 drink: when the mom loves the dress
2 drinks: when the bride cries after she puts a dress on

Ok, so that's all we've decided so far. But we're putting our pumpkin ale to good use.

Slowly but surely, things are coming together here in Crystal City. It's been an exhausting process for sure, but every day one or two more things come together to make my new apartment a little homier. As I am a poor intern, I've decided to go along the more "minimalistic" track of decorating, but thus far it seems to be working quite well.

The roommate and I found a great table at Eastern Market that we've decided to fancy up by adding out own flair. And by flair I basically just mean paint. But nonetheless, its been a fun project, sanding and painting everything down.

Everything seems to be speeding by so quickly lately that I can't believe it. Tonight, I got a call from my little, describing how the new members in our sorority are picking their bigs tonight. I can't even believe that it's been an entire year since I last went through that. I remember wanting to be done with college so badly, ready to take on the world and now I am and it's a completely different experience than I had thought. I'm not going to lie, being a "grown up" is exponentially more stressful than I had anticipated. But fortunately, I'm living in a city I love surrounded by some of the most inspirational people I'll ever meet.

Also, it is officially fall, my absolute favorite season, and I cannot wait to share with you the scenery that is sure to come.

New beginnings

What a whirlwind my life has been lately, leaving me absent from blogging for far longer than I prefer.

My new internship has been absolutely amazing, everything that I want in a job and more. I'm finally where I want to be, doing what I want to do and I could not be any happier.

In other news, this past weekend I moved in to my every own D.C. apartment. Crystal City (aka Arlington) is my new stomping grounds. I would just like to point out that living 14 hours away from your brother is not conducive to moving and building furniture, but at least I'm turning in to one handy girl. I've (almost) successfully built a dresser and a bed and bargained, bought, sanded and painted a dining room table. I believe I could start an entire new blog that chronicles this adventure, but for now I'll leave you with some photos.

Turning a new leaf

Last week, I had a little mini-reunion with my UCF sorority sisters here in DC and one of our sisters who was visiting with her bf. First of all, I don't know where I would be without having a few sisters here in DC with me, its honestly made the move so much easier knowing I have a safety net to fall back on. Being Greek has been a huge blessing, not only for the amazing women I met in and out of my chapter, but having the Greek connection has helped tremendously in networking for my career and even building close friendships in a new city.

So, when Ash came into town with her bf, us DC gals knew exactly where to take her. Matchbox. Seriously, one of my favorite DC restaurants, located in Chinatown, this eatery has the most delicious gourmet pizzas, salads and more. Tessa and I split a gouda pizza and an apple/pear salad. Amazing!

The big man's house

This week I finally got the chance to tour the White House. I had nearly given up on it, since you have to jump through so many hoops and red tape to get on the list (understandably of course). As excited as I was to go to on the tour, please don't think me unpatriotic when I say it was a bit disappointing. I don't mean disappointing so much as it just didn't live up to everything I had expected. For starters, you can't bring anything in that place - I had to leave my entire purse at the office and just bring my ID. Cell phones have to be turned off and there is absolutely no taking pictures, which if you know me is hard to resist.

But it was a cool experience to at least say I've done it. Mom asked if I got to see the Oval Office or any former living quarters, not quite, but it was cool to see the stately dining rooms with furniture and paintings dating back to 1800.

My favorite part was in the tourist entrance, they had photo collages lining the halls, each with a different theme. There were collages of presidents with their dogs, White House weddings and other especially memorable moments - Easter Egg hunt etc. These gave it so much more of a personal vibe, which makes it easier to relate to, if that's possible!

Despite the fact that I do frequently complain about it, I have to admit, I love the D.C. metro. Now don't let me get ahead of myself, I certainly don't love the delays and broken down trains, but there is something magical about living in such a bustling city. I just love the feeling of waking up and not knowing who you'll walk past, meet or sit next to.

I think since starting my new internship, I've become even more enticed by the metro system. Possibly because our building is practically on top of the entrance so I don't have to walk far in this sweltering heat, but more so, I think it has to do with the little old man that gives out the free papers every morning when you exit/enter. I just adore him for his excitement for life. Rain or shine, he's always out there, with his Express in hand greeting you with a "Good Morning!" Many probably ignore him in their early morning, pre-coffee state, but it makes my day to greet him right back.

Weekend Recap

This weekend I took a much needed mini-hiatus and headed down to South Carolina to visit mom & stepdad. Lucky for me, LW's fam is from Columbia too so I caught a ride with her, her bf and their pup, making to 7+ hour drive much more enjoyable.

Cuddled up with LW's pup, Laila, I finally got the chance to finish The Time Traveler's Wife, an amazing book that I completely fell in love with. Although, I'll admit, I was a bit confused at first with multiple protagonists at varying ages in one time period, I finally managed to wrap my head around the concept and then couldn't put the book down.

Once home, mom and I explored her new town a bit. We found a restaurant/bar called The Flying Saucer which had well over 100 different types of beer on tap. We tried cherry, blueberry and even pear beers, which was an interesting experience! If you drink every type of beer they offer (and believe you me it's a lot), the restaurant honors you with your very own saucer on the wall. My favorites were "this will look good on my resume" and "I would have finished sooner if I didn't have a girlfriend." oh good times.

Mom and I also went to go see Julie & Julia - and the reviews are spot-on! The movie really was absolutely delightful. I didn't even expect it to be as funny as it was.

Today, instead of being the usual first day back to school, I started my new internship in D.C. I am absolutely loving the company and the account I'm on! It's exciting to be in the epicenter of change and development every day. And on that note, I'm fixin' to take my tired bones to bed so I can be up and at 'em again tomorrow!

One of my favorite parts of home - my sweet Molly. Look at that ghost face, I can't believe it's been 10 years since we brought her home!

Yesterday afternoon, co-worker LW and I began discussing our affinity for design and wine (two great gifts in life). As she shared with me some great ideas for touring Virginia wineries we also began discussing how much we love wine-themes when decorating. As she and her bf have just moved into their first condo, she's been sharing with me all of her decorating ideas, which are fabulous!

I absolutely fell in love with landscape designer Scott Cohen, who's work she introduced me to. Featured on HGTV in the past, Scott Cohen not only does landscape design, but he also builds fiberoptic outdoor bars and barbaques that are made out recycled wine bottles. You'll also have to visit his Web site, where LW worked on some videos for him during grad school!

Oh life

Forgive me while I go into Carrie Bradshaw mode, but sometimes a girl just wants to write. As I look back at my blog, I've come to the realization that I so tentatively tip-toe around what I'm truly feeling. Maybe I'm afraid that I'll be tuned out or become vulnerable or maybe I'm honesty afraid to even admit to myself my own worries and insecurities.

Eight months ago, in early December, I broke up with my boyfriend of 2.5 years on my journey to find myself. I knew it was the right thing to do, and still do, despite the pain that I caused both of us. But as I sit here nearly a year later, my self-discovery still hasn't quite hit me. Its lead me to a different city, one where I have no family or best friends and even no permanent job. Although I know in my heart that this has been the best (and only thing) that I've ever done for myself, some days I still question my own motives and His. Here I am, 15 hours away from my best friend, 13 hours away from my dad and at least 8 hours away from my mom and I'm struggling to find myself in a city that's, some days, still completely foreign. Did I come to a big, new city because deep down I knew it would be a distraction from my tumultuous thoughts? Maybe. But lately, even this fast-paced new world hasn't been enough to outrun myself.

I recently finished the book Riding the Bus with My Sister and some parts of it hit just a little too close to home. Namely the fact that I, like the main character, have a tendency of bogging myself down with tasks, jobs and structure in order to skirt around the worries that pervade my thoughts and tickle my emotions. But faster and faster I'm coming to the all too obvious conclusion that I will never have everything perfectly scheduled out to fit in my ideal life plans. Sometimes you don't land the job of your dreams. Sometimes you pour your heart out only to realize that old adage "If you love something let it go, If it comes back to you it's yours, If it doesn't, it never was" is true after all.

And sometimes, you just have to have a little faith.

La Vie Boheme

A couple weeks ago, my PR pal, LW, and I attended a networking event that joined our organization WWPR with the Wolf Trap Young Professional Society. As we were not completely familiar with Wolf Trap at that time, we got to learn a little about their society and mingle around for the evening. Low and behold, a few days later, LW received an email congratulating her on her winning 2 tickets to the opera! So of course, we jumped at the chance to become a little more cultured with free wine tasting and opera tickets. How could we resist?

So last night, we headed out to Wolf Trap for the event and I am so glad we went! The opera was Puccini's La Boheme and it was absolutely gorgeous. Luckily since La Boheme is the opera that the now-famous musical Rent was based on, we knew the plot line and didn't have to solely rely on the subtitles.

But only only was the opera itself breathtaking, the venue was so unique and fun! Wolf Trap is a national park that also is home to a huge, outdoor performing arts center. The building is almost like an amplitheater, but a little more upscale and really architecturally interesting. It was the coolest experience to watch an opera, live with an orchestra and full choir, outside! The stage was gorgeous but it was really neat to have the shroud of trees as a peripheral backdrop. To make the night even better, it was an especially fall-like weather, cool and with no humidity. Oh, I can't wait for the leaves to change.

The Daily Candy e-Newsletters are quite honestly often the highlight of my mornings. A couple days ago I received the Washington D.C. e-blast and I was delighted to find a local furniture seller Primitive & Proper.

How adorable are their pieces? I'm lusting over some of these vanities.

I've always wanted a vanity in my room, I think they look so cute, Southern and old-fashioned. Perhaps I'll scrounge around Craigslist for one as well.

City Saturdays

Yesterday was another perfect Saturday in the city. I'm finding out here in DC, more and more, that Theta truly is "for a lifetime." Forgive me if that sounds completely cheesy, but I've met more Theta alum in the area that I could have ever imagined. So yesterday, JB, a Theta sister from my own pledge class who recently moved up here with her bf, and I decided to attend the DC Theta Alum Brunch Bunch. It was so nice meeting Thetas of all different ages and walks of life - we're really excited to continue this tradition.

Last night, I finally got to meet up with my little, who's also interning in DC but heading back to UCF soon. We've both been so busy that we hardly see each other. So last night, we decided to cross something off both our lists by visiting the Kennedy Center.

Every night, the Kennedy Center does a free, small performance on their Millennium Stage. Last night we headed up there with a few of her friends to catch a jazz band perform and discovered our new favorite DC sightseeing spot - the terrace rooftop. At the Kennedy Center, you can take the elevator up to the rooftop terrace and relax with a drink or just peruse around. Seriously, this is the best view of DC I've come across since I've been here. You can see all the monuments, Georgetown and the Potomac. It's so serene and gorgeous. It'd be the perfect spot for a wedding reception (if I was rich). I've decided that DC is one of the most romantic places in America - with all the culture, sights and sounds there's plenty of cute 'date night' activities and the atmosphere is just wonderful.

Nurturing my network

As an avid follower of the Capital Communicators blog (a communication professionals association), I have recently been captivated by the new tactic of one of their contributors. This tactic they call "nurturing my professional network" is essentially a pay it forward type of plan. Each day, the blogger extends help/expertise to one or more people in their network. This can be anything from sending a query over to a friend at a niche agency to connecting with colleagues over coffee. Reading this series has gotten me thinking, what's stopping me from doing this too?

So, I've decided that I, too, am going to try to "nurture my network." Not just my professional network, but that of everyone I know. I'm going to try to do 1 helpful thing every day that will, essentially, provide me with the satisfaction of helping others. For example, as I currently intern at a nonprofit where not everyone is communications oriented, I've become really close with my fellow PR intern. And as our internship is dwindling down these next couple weeks, we're both starting to panic a little about beginning the job search again. So when I found a dream entry-level position online with one of the most renowned PR agencies, believe you me, I was pretty excited. But then I sat back for a minute and wondered about LW (my co-intern). Knowing she would be equally as excited, I decided to pass this this opportunity on instead of just holding it back for myself. Now I know she may have eventually found it as well, but I thoroughly believe that relationship building is a fundamental part of PR. Thus, my small act may not get either of us very far, but at least we can empathize with eachother - working together to help build our futures.

If nothing else, extending some positive karma can't be a bad thing, right?

In memory

This past Friday, my dad called me with some sad news, the passing of my great-grandma, Mimi. Mimi had just celebrated her 95th birthday and she'd been suffering from Alzheimer's Disease for the last 10-15 years, so our family has been prepared for a long time, but nonetheless it struck me as extremely sad since it's the first death in my family.

But recently I'd been thinking about Mimi more and more. Even though she hasn't known who I am for a long time, she was such a fiery woman I always held her near and dear in my heart. For my recent college graduation, my grandparents gave me a ring that used to belong to her. The diamond had been in my grandad's family for generations and in the 1960's they had it put into this gorgeous setting and gave it to Mimi for a Christmas gift one year. A few weeks ago, my G.G. (my grandma, Mimi's daughter), sent me the pictures of Mimi receiving the ring that I now am honored to own.

Thankfully, growing up with a CPA in the family helped me learn a thing or two about saving money, which has given me a lot more freedom to try my hand in a new city. Kindle - friend or foe?

I am, admittedly, a quintessential old soul. I know this, my friends know this, it's something I've long come to terms with. Although I love to keep abreast on the latest and greatest developments in the world (Web 2.0 and otherwise), at heart, I'm just a girl who was perhaps born in the wrong generation. I'll take a nice dinner with friends over bar-hopping any day of the week and my wardrobe tends to lean more on the J. Crew side than something uber trendy/revealing and I have a fondness for snail mail that will always exist. Call me crazy, I know.

Living in D.C., I've seen more and more people using the new Amazon Kindle. Although, even as an avid iPhone user, I just can't wrap my arms around this technology development. Sure it's useful and handy, but where's the warmth and comfort that comes when you open the pages of a beloved book? Where's the musty smell of the library or your favorite used book store when you first crack the spine of a favorite story? As a girl that goes through books like I'm devouring chocolate, I just can't imagine the relaxing into the stiffness this technology.

My good-friend, Gramercy Gas Light Girl, recently posted this link on the new wave of pirated e-books. I just find it hard to believe that this is what reading is coming to! I've come to the decision that I, too, like GGLG, am fundamentally opposed to this technology. It's almost heartbreaking to think that there's no more dog-eared pages or notes scribbled on favorite passages.

I mean, in all honesty, how comforting does this look? Coffee and a Kindle? I think not.

Diamonds, Dresses and Dinners

Throughout this week, I came up with probably 10 interesting blog posts, but in the midst of my hectic week I lost them all, not having any time to spit down and post. I was practically living off coffee intravenously this week as we prepped to launch our new Web site at work. Goodness, what a task if you're doing that in-house!

But despite the busy workload, I still had time to enjoy a few great moments with friends in the city. Monday night, Tess and I ate at a Me diterranean Restaurant in D.C. that was absolutely to die for! I also got to see her cute new house in Cleveland Park, an area of the city that I adore for its cute homes and residential feel. Tuesday night was my first board meeting with WWPR as the Co-Marketing Communications Chair. The ladies in this group are so wonderful and I can't wait to get involved even more. Wednesday night, I finally had the opportunity to catch The Proposal with some girls in the office around the corner. I love the rom-com movie genre, so I thought this was just too cute!

Today, I finally made it to see the rest of the Smithsonian museums. They just seem to get better and better, I would never be able to choose a favorite. Since moving to D.C., I'd only been to the Air & Space Museum, which I thought was going to be the best by far. But oh no, they get even more interesting. Today, I toured the Freer Gallery of Art, Natural History Museum and the American History Museum.

The National History Museum is absolutely amazing and huge! Literally, you can find everything from elephant skeletons to emeralds in this place. My favorite areas were the butterfly gardens and the gem stone section (featuring the gorgeous Hope Diamond). The American History Museum was amazing as well, but unfortunately my tired feet were done after the second floor. I had really come for the First Ladies exhibit and after waiting in line for about 30 minutes I decided to call it a day when I was done. But at least I have the third floor to call me back for a returned visit soon (thank goodness these museums are free).

The quiet things that no one knows

Today was quite simply a wonderful day. Nothing particularly groundbreaking happened, but it was just one of those great Sundays where everything was simple, quiet and relaxing. To start, I got free breakfast at Panera's, found my lost sunglasses and my favorite tweezers! How can a girl not be happy with that good fortune?

After my delightful morning, I headed to Reagan to pick up my boss from the airport and we spent the afternoon chatting and catching up. We decided to enjoy the lovely weather by heading over to the waterfront area with some dinner. We sat at the marina at Dyke Marsh Trail, one of my favorite areas in Alexandria, and just enjoyed the breeze. I poked around the trails afterward and even caught a few glimpses of bald eagles (again! yay).

I cannot wait to come back here in the fall, when the leaves are bright and colorful. It's going to be breathtaking!

PS - My uncle took my gma to swim with the dolphins this weekend, isn't she cute? Makes me miss good ol' Fla a bit.

The fireworks have passed

I have to say, I think I had one of the best Fourth of July celebrations in a very long time this year! After celebrating at Harbor Fest on Friday, I celebrated Independence Day with Chris and his gf at a local park, Mount Trashmore. Trust me, the name was a bit of a concern to me too, especially after Chris told me that this park was a former trash heap (or something like that). But today it's just a huge hill, which turned out to be perfect for firework-viewing because not only did we get to see the fireworks display that the park put on, but we could also see the fireworks at VA Beach and the amplitheater over the treeline. It was gorgeous!

Sunday, I talked Chris into driving up to Williamsburg with me. I hadn't been to Colonial Williamsburg in forever (back when the parents made us take family pictures dressed up as colonial folk). So, despite the 66 degree weather and the rain, it was a really fun trip!

Now it's back to the grind and it's finally hitting me that I will not be returning to school in a month. I really am a graduate. No back-to-school shopping expiditions in my future this year! Sadness.

Fourth of July is honest-to-goodness my favorite holiday. I just love it because it instills such a sense of community and camaraderie - for a brief moment during the year, everyone across our country is united in remembrance of how far our ancestors came to bring us to where we stand today. And besides the feel-good commemorative moments that rise during this momentous holiday, the Fourth is of course a great celebration with food, sun and fun!

Although the Fourth in D.C. is breathtaking I'm sure, I decided to head down to VA Beach for the holiday weekend to spend some time with family. As my step-bro (to be) recently moved here, we decided to explore the area a little more and lucked out when we came across the Harbor Fest in Norfolk. I get to enjoy fireworks every night this weekend!

Although my wedding (if I have one) is about as far off as receiving my AARP card, with the wedding season upon us, I can't help to stop from sighing when I see something fabulous.

Much to my delight, earlier this summer, the always lovely and witty CPK hosted a book swap. Now as an avid reader, a self proclaimed bookworm if you will, I of course had to jump on this opportunity asap. Paired with CPK herself, the wise woman sent over a memoir by Amy Cohen, The Late Bloomer's Revolution. The girl must be able to read my mind, because I could not put this book down! It was so endearing, funny and realistic at the same time that I nearly wanted to stay on the metro every day after work just to continue reading.

So, if you have not picked up this one yet, run off to your nearest Barnes & Noble or library and get your copy now! I guarantee you'll enjoy it too.
